The Build Out Line (BOL)

For 7 v 7 (U9-U10) games, fields should have a Build Out Line marked on the field. This line should be parallel to and halfway between the top of the penalty area and the halfway line.

Goalkeeper Possession, Goal Kick, or Free Kick inside the penalty area:

  • The opposing team must retreat behind the BOL until the ball is put into play
  • The ball is “in play” and opponents can cross the BOL when:
    • Goalkeepers release it from their possession (pass, roll, throw)
    • The ball is kicked and moves (goal kick)

Notes to Referees

  • The purpose of the build out line is to allow players to learn to play with a little less pressure. While the Laws of the Game say goalkeeper possession is limited to 6 seconds, be patient while the players are learning
  • While teams can wait for the opponent to retreat, it is not required. If the team wants a ‘quick restart’ and doesn’t wait, it is okay, but if they lose possession, it is not a ‘do over’
  • If coaches and players are unsure of the procedure, use the time as a teaching moment and explain
  • Normally, the halfway line helps determine Offside. In 7 v 7 games, a player is not in an offside position if the are behind the opposing BOL
  • There are no punts, drop kicks, or heading in 7 v 7 games (so no heading U9-U11)
