In Memory Of...

Dave Erwin

David J. Erwin, Jr., 61, of Newington, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2018 from complications following a long battle with Amyloidosis. His loving wife Susan and children were by his side. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Susan Gawel Erwin, originally of Meriden, his children Melissa Bruce and her husband Gregory, John Erwin, and Mary Erwin, granddaughters Olivia and Emma Bruce, his sisters and brothers-in-law, Patricia Garrity, Anita and Larry Billman, Marilyn and Frank Kerns, Maureen and Bill Collins, as well as many nieces and nephews. Dave is predeceased by his parents, David Erwin, Sr. and Dolores (Gerz) Erwin of Newington, and his brother-in-law Paul Garrity. He was employed by Voya Financial in Windsor and Cape Cab in Cape Cod, MA.

Dave was actively involved with the Soccer Club of Newington serving as a coach, Club President, Referee Coordinator, Referee Assignor and was a referee for 21 years. He also was a member of the Connecticut Junior Soccer Association acting as a member of the Board of Governors. Dave could often be found on the soccer fields showing support and encouragement to young referees. He enjoyed volunteering for the U.S. National Team during games in Hartford. Dave was also an avid coin collector and enjoyed traveling to Chatham Massachusetts to spend time at the beach with his family and going clamming.

His family would like to thank his many doctors and nurses at Mass. General Hospital, especially Dr. Bimal Dey, the cardiac transplant team and his transplant liaison Coral Hagan. The family cannot express enough gratitude to the generous Connecticut family who unselfishly gave Dave his new heart in April of 2010.

Funeral services for Dave will begin on Wednesday, January 17, 2018. at 8:45 a.m. from the Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, 626 Willard Ave. Newington. Friends and family may call on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Newington Memorial Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Donate Life and Dave would encourage everyone to sign up to become an organ donor.
